Acupuncture found to help IBS
Posted on March 20, 2014 at 9:51 AM |
Yet another study proves the benefits of acupuncture for an all too common ailment. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is characterized by abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, constipation and diarrhea. Approximately one in five adults in the United States has IBS. Women are more likely to experience symptoms. There is no known specific cause, but experts suggest people who suffer are more sensitive and reactive to foods and stress. People who suffer from IBS frequently also suffer from anxiety and depression, which worsens symptoms, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. The reason may be linked to the fact that the colon is in part controlled by the nervous system. So far there is no treatment for IBS, but there are ways to manage the symptoms and discomfort. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce anxiety, stress, an overactive nervous system, as well as gastrointestinal distress.
